Mentoring Awards

Read the Girl Scout Law and you’ll understand why Girl Scouts are so good at helping one another. Mentoring is another skill progression encouraged and awarded in Girl Scouts, as older Girl Scouts (JCSA) guide and assist younger Girl Scouts.

  • Junior Aide
  • Leader in Action (LiA) Award
  • Program Aide
  • Counselor-in-Training (CIT) I and II
  • Volunteer-in-Training (VIT)

Junior Aide

Girl Scout Juniors can earn the Junior Aide award by making and completing a plan to guide Girl Scout Daisies or Brownies on one of their Journeys. Troop leaders may guide Girls Scouts to earn this award. Find the Junior Aide requirements in the Girl Scout Junior Handbook. Place this award directly beneath the Bridge to Junior Girl Scouts Award.

Leader in Action Award (LiA)

The Leader in Action (LiA) award is earned by a Girl Scout Cadette who helps a Brownie troop or group work on any of the Brownie journeys. The LiA award is earned by establishing a partnership with a Brownie troop. Find the LiA requirements in the Brownie program grade level Journey guide for adults.

Program Aide

Program Aide is an award pin for Girl Scout Cadettes who complete a mentoring training program designed to teach girls how to work with younger youth in program settings. Earning the Program Aide pin consists of three steps:

  1. Earn one LiA award.
  2. Complete a Council-designed leadership course.
  3. Work with younger youth (at least two years younger than you are) over the course of six different activity sessions.

Program Aide (PA) training prepares Cadette Girl Scouts (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) to work with children and adapt activities for special needs and situations. Cadettes will be ready to put their new skills to the test by completing hands-on activities that prepare them for real life situations working with younger kids in troops, at day camps, and at council and service unit events. This training is tons of fun and participants will leave feeling energized and ready to jump into a variety of leadership roles with younger Girl Scouts!

Want to get started? There are three great options!

Counselor-in-Training (CIT and CIT II)

Counselor in Training (CIT) I is an award pin for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who mentor girls in a camp setting for one session. The CIT I award requires completion of a Council-designed leadership course, which you can find in our summer camp brochure.

Counselor in Training (CIT) II is an award pin for Girl Scout Ambassadors who have completed the CIT I course and mentor girls in a camp setting for one session, while focusing on teaching skills in a particular area such as programming, waterfront, or trip leading. The CIT II award requires completion of a Council-designed leadership course, which you can find in our summer camp brochure.

Volunteer-in-Training (VIT)

Volunteer in Training (VIT) is an award pin for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who mentor girls outside of a camp experience such as leading a troop, for example. To earn the VIT award, Girl Scouts complete a Council-designed leadership course for the age group they wish to volunteer with and find a mentor volunteer who is currently leading a group of girls at this level. Work with this troop over the course of a three-to-six-month period. Create and implement Journey or badge programming for at least four sessions with this group.
