Belgian Heritage Center
Explore Belgian life on the Door Peninsula past and present. This program will share the story of Belgians who first settled on the Door Peninsula in 1853 in parts of Brown, Door and Kewaunee counties. Girl Scouts will hear stories about the struggles in their homeland, their challenges building communities in the wilderness and the vibrant legacy that continues to this day. History will include the Great Fire of 1871 and how it changed the landscape and lives of the Belgian settlers. We will also highlight the many ways Belgian traditions and influence remain common to this day. For those with Belgian roots, we will help them find photos, video or genealogies of their families.
The Belgian Heritage Center campus includes a museum with exhibits, interactive photo and video galleries, and oral histories in English and Walloon (one of the languages spoken by the settlers). A 1894 restored school/convent shows visitors various aspects of life and learning in 1900. There is also a traditional Belgian roadside chapel, one of dozens found in the area. This field trip helps Girl Scouts earn Good Neighbor (k-1st grade), Celebrating Community (2nd-3rd grade), and Playing in the Past (4th-5th grade) badges. Community service opportunities available for older Girl Scouts. The program is available May through November. Program details will be adapted to the age group attending.

Ephraim Historical Foundation
Visit Ephraim Historical Foundation for a variety of badge earning experiences!
Good Neighbor (Daisy, K-1) –
This experience will begin with a tour of the Pioneer Schoolhouse, a one-room schoolhouse that sparked the creation of the Ephraim Historical Foundation. After considering what being a good school citizen looked like in the past and discussing what that looks like in the present, we will walk into downtown Ephraim, seeing the historical Fire Station Museum, Town Hall, and Library and discuss their importance to the community! The program will finish on the shore of Eagle Harbor with a discussion on why visitors come from afar to our beautiful home state.
Celebrating Community (Brownie, 2-3) –
This program dives into Ephraim’s annual Fyr Bal celebration that is held around the time of summer solstice. After learning about the history of the celebration and what it looks like now, participants will explore important symbols, activities, and sites of the celebration. To wrap up the program, each participant will have the opportunity to create their own medallions symbolic of what they have learned about Ephraim and Fyr Bal.
My Family Story (Brownie, 2-3) –
In this program, we will learn about a historic local family, where they came from, and details about their family life here in Ephraim. After exploring the Anderson Store Museum which the family operated for close to 100 years, we will move to our research library to discuss family trees and interact with important artifacts from the Anderson family. The program ends with participants creating their version of an Anderson family crest.
Playing in the Past (Junior, 4-5) –
After learning about several of Ephraim’s well-known early female immigrants, participants will choose a character and pick clothing or accessories from our teaching collection that best represent that character. With the option to don pieces of period clothing, participants will then tour the Anderson Store Museum where household items that their characters would have utilized are on display. After playing a group period game, the participants will finish the outing by writing a diary page that describes their character based on what they learned and experienced.
